Wrexham Candidate Tom Rippeth

Tom Rippeth

Born in 1966, Tom Rippeth has lived in North Wales since 1987. He is a graduate of the Universities of Reading and Wales and currently a Reader in Physical Oceanography and Climate at Bangor University and a visting scientist at the Proudman Oceanographic Laboratory in Liverpool. As a scientist Tom has won two prestigious environmental research fellowships, published over 50 research papers and has been invited to speak at numerous international conferences and at the National Assembly in Cardiff.

Tom has stood for national office twice, on both occasions for the Wrexham constituency. In 2003 he contested the constituency for the elections to the National Assembly of Wales and then in 2005 for Westminster. At the 2005 General Election achieved second place behind Labour with a swing a 7% from Labour to Lib Dem.

His main political interest is fighting for local jobs and businesses, while taking a keen interest in climate change action and the development of a green economy at local, national and global level. Locally he has a record of fighting for local serivces, leading campaigns to save local Post Office from closure and against Assembly proposals to force patients to travel from North Wales to South Wales for NHS treatment.

Outside politics Tom is a musician, playing the Trombone in a New Orleans Jazzband, and is a keen cyclist. In the last couple of years Tom has done the coast to coast cycle ride, as well as cycling around the Island of Mull and the length of the outer Hebrides. He also enjoys getting out on his mountain bike to places like Llyn Brenig and Llandegla. He is also cross-country skier and fell walker. Tom is a Welsh learner, having passed the level equivalent exam.

    • Maesydre Residents' and Tenants' Association
Residents' and Tenants' Associations are set up to bring people together to work for the benefit of their local community. Some of the topics discussed concern the environment, anti social behaviour and housing issues. Training is available to help set up an association. I have spoken to several ward members who feel Maesydre needs an association to represent the community and have arranged for an initial meeting to form an Association to be held on TUESDAY 17th August, 2010 at THE QUAKER MEETING HOUSE HOLT RD. at 7.00 p.m. [If you are holiday on that date but interested in getting involved, let Carole O'Toole know and she will keep you informed.] Published and promoted M Edwards on behalf of Bill Brereton and the Wrexham and Clwyd South Lib Dems, all of 13 Sandrock Road, Marford, Wrexham LL12 8LT Printed (hosted) by Prater Raines Ltd, 98 Sandgate High Street, Folkestone CT20 3BY

    • Brown in Wrexham showing Labour panic over seat and region - Tom Rippeth
Responding to the visit of Gordon Brown to Wrexham today, Tom Rippeth, Welsh Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate said: "Gordon Brown's visit to Wrexham today shows that Labour are panicking about their support in this seat and across North Wales. The amount of visits they've had here over the last few days just goes to show that they need something else to boost their support as their record of government over the last 13 years does nothing to help them. "They know that their vote has collapsed here and right across North Wales. They are desperate to bolster this waning support. "They've had 13 years to bring about the changes that people want and they have failed. They must not be allowed five more years in control of our public services and our economy. "Gordon Brown's visit to the constituency today will remind people of his failure to deal with the economic crisis and his poor record as Prime Minister over the past three years. "Support for the Liberal Democrats has been growing and growing as people are turning away from a failed Labour party. In Wrexham, if you vote Lib Dem you will get a hardworking Member of Parliament representing all the people in this constituency and a strong voice for North Wales." • Tom Rippeth: Scrap 'dead duck' air-link that no-one wants to operate
Commenting on the news that the troubled North-South Air link has suffered a further set back after no operators made suitable bids for the latest tender, Welsh Lib Dem candidate for Wrexham Dr Tom Rippeth said: "It is astounding that even at the shockingly high level of public subsidy, Ieuan Wyn Jones is offering operators, not one has come forward with a suitable bid. "We have always said this subsidy was unsustainable in environmental and public expense terms, this news shows it is unsustainable in operational terms as well. "This is a service for the few not the many and it will be scandalous if the Labour-Plaid Government re-act to this by just upping the level of subsidy offered. Ieuan should scrap it for good before he wastes any more public money on a dead duck instead of spending it on sustainable transport for all." • WWF's Earth Hour - 27 March 2010, 8.30pm Tom Rippeth switches off and joins WWF for the greatest show on Earth
Wrexham Liberal Democrat candidate and climate scientist Dr Tom Rippeth has publicly backed WWF's Earth Hour and urges people, schools and business in Wrexham to also sign up to the big switch off to show they care about climate change. By switching off their lights off for one hour on Saturday 27 March at 8.30pm they will join millions of others across the globe in a graphic demonstration to decision makers that they support urgent action on climate change. In 2009, millions of individuals in 4,088 towns and cities from over 80 countries took part in Earth Hour - to demonstrate their concern about climate change and the future of our planet to world leaders. 800 iconic landmarks around the world switched off their lights for one hour and transformed the global skyline in a dramatic call for action. Last year in Wales nearly 70 per cent of all local authorities signed up together with over a 100 schools, and iconic landmarks such as Wales' Millennium Stadium, Caernarfon Castle and the National Library for Wales in Aberystwyth switched off. A total of 200 buildings across the UK including Big Ben, Edinburgh Castle and Stormont went dark for WWF's Earth Hour too. Families embarked on nature trails in the dark and one couple even got married in darkness. Diners enjoyed candlelit dinners around the globe whilst watching as major landmarks such as the Sydney Opera House, the Pyramids of Giza and the Empire State Building turned out their lights. This year WWF would like to make Earth Hour even bigger and better with your help. Schools, communities, organisations and individuals can all take part in 2010 to show they support people and wildlife threatened by climate change. Tom said: "Getting involved and signing up to WWF's Earth Hour is the perfect and easy way of showing you care about climate change and the planet. The threats to people and nature are real so I urge everyone to sign up in support of action against climate change." Climate change is one of the most serious threats facing people and nature, and demands urgent global action. Last year, world leaders missed a key opportunity to agree a global climate deal in Copenhagen, but with each year of delay, the impacts on people and wildlife get more severe and the window of opportunity gets smaller. So we need everyone to switch off and support Earth Hour once again in 2010 - show world leaders they need to finish the job, and be one of many millions of people around the world united in their call for action. "WWF's Earth Hour is an inspiring opportunity for people to do something positive to help tackle climate change," said Anne Meikle, Head of WWF Cymru. "Last year's Earth Hour was the biggest ever climate change event. By making it even bigger this year, we can all send a strong message to world leaders that people around the globe are united in calling for decisive action on climate change." • Tom Rippeth calls for lower taxes for local families
Local families will benefit from a tax cut worth up to £1,400 under the Lib Dems. The plans announced by Nick Clegg mean the first £10,000 earned by each person will be exempt from income tax - a £700 tax cut for each working individual. Pensioners will be £100 a year better off too. The tax cut will be paid for by closing tax loopholes exploited by the very rich to avoid paying a fair share of tax.
