The former head of school improvement for Newport City Council and education consultant,Terry Mackie, is clearly deeply concerned about the education system in Wales. He cites the PISA Survey of 2009. This compares 15years olds from 65 countries. It is a damning indictment of what the Labour/Plaid Coalition Government have allowed to happen to education in Wales. Wales is not only bottom of the UK league but even worse than in 2006. The 2010 summer assessments confirm that at 14, 16, and 18, our students are losing ground compared to the rest of the UK.
Wales is supposed to be a 'Learning Country' - but Mr Mackie says that we are living in a "Slow Learning Country"! The Labour/Plaid Assembly Government has failed to evaluate what has gone wrong. Revenue resources for schools are a national disgrace. There have been too many innovations and initiatives.
A plain speaking person would call these gimmicks. Too many gimmicks, and an underfunded eduction system. No wonder teachers struggle to teach our children. No wonder our children fail to get the education that they deserve. No wonder they are not properly to equipped for life and work.
The Welsh Liberal Democrats will scrap the General Teaching Council for Wales - another quango to bite the dust - and invest that money wisely in the professional development of teachers. At the same time give a pupil premium of £2,500 for the children who need it most. Reversing the shameful underfunding in our young people's education.
Wales is behind because we do not invest wisely and properly in our most precious asset - our young people. Let's put that right.
