Help, not hinder academic excellence in Wales - Williams and Rippeth

April 27, 2010 9:15 PM

Kirsty Williams, leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats and Wrexham parliamentary candidate Tom Rippeth today visited Glyndŵr University to highlight the party's long standing commitment to abolishing tuition fees for all students and to ensure that Welsh businesses benefit from ideas developed in Welsh Universities.

The visit also draws attention to the importance of the role first-time voters will have in deciding the outcome of the election. The Electoral Commission announced that the number of people registering to vote has increased and a high proportion of those were young people.

Tom RippethTom Rippeth, Welsh Lib Dem Wrexham candidate said,

As a university lecturer, I regularly speak to young people who are being put off their education by high levels of debt. I believe that university education should be available to everyone and that no-one should be put off by the costs. One of our main priorities in this election is to give children a fairer start in life. We want make sure that they dont have to worry about crippling university debts and that young people can go on to reach their full potential and help boost the Welsh economy. We should be helping, not hindering, academic excellence in Wales.

I'm glad that even in these difficult economic times, weve been able to prioritise money for improving access to higher education for young people in Wales.

The Welsh Liberal Democrats also recognise the important role further and higher education plays in developing a green and sustainable economy. We want to encourage a closer link between universities and private business to ensure that Wales best ideas are contributing to our economy.

Kirsty Williams Leader of the Welsh Lib DemsKirsty Williams, leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats added,

Investing in education means investing in the economy. For every £1 we invest, the economy gets over £5 back. I believe we need a fair economy and the ideas that are generated in the first-class universities we have in Wales will help us to achieve this.

Tom Rippeth is an excellent candidate for the people of Wrexham as he has been campaigning to improve local skills. Our green economic stimulus package that Nick Clegg announced last Monday in Wales will help deliver jobs to all part of the country that will give that much needed boost to the Welsh economy.

After failed economic strategies from the old parties in Westminster, we need to rebuild our economy based on small businesses using good ideas not financial gambling in the City of London.
