Welcome to the website of Wrexham Liberal Democrats

The Liberal Democrats exist to build and safeguard a fair, free and open society, in which we seek to balance the fundamental values of liberty, equality and community, and in which no-one shall be enslaved by poverty, ignorance or conformity.

Our campaign will be built around four steps to a fairer Britain:

  • Fair taxes: We will ensure no-one pays income tax on the first £10,000 they earn. 3.6m low-income workers and pensioners will be freed from paying income tax and millions more will have a tax cut of £700 a year. We'll pay for it by closing loopholes that unfairly benefit the rich, a new tax on mansions worth over £2m, and ensuring polluters pay for the damage they cause.
  • A fair start for all our children: We will get every child the individual attention they need by cutting class sizes. We will spend an extra £2.5bn on schools, targeted at children who need the most help. The average primary school could cut class sizes to 20. An average secondary school could see classes of just 16.
  • A fair future: a rebalanced, green economy: We will create hundreds of thousands of new jobs with a £3.5bn green stimulus and job creation plan in our first year in government, fully funded by cut backs elsewhere. We will break up the banks and rebalance the economy away from unsustainable financial speculation. And we will be honest about where savings must be made in government spending to balance the books and protect our children's future.
  • A fair deal from politicians: We will introduce a fair voting system to end safe seats and make all MPs listen to people. We will ensure corrupt MPs can be sacked by their constituents and stop non-doms from donating to parties or sitting in Parliament. We will take power from Westminster and give it to councils and communities, with local power over police and the NHS.

Our four steps to a fairer Britain will represent the most radical change to Britain in a generation and they are underpinned by the action we will take to protect frontline NHS services, put more police on patrol, restore the pensions earnings link and deliver fair pay for our armed forces. Pledges we can make because we are the only party with a plan to balance the country's books after the recession.

In his keynote speech to the Liberal Democrat Conference, Party Leader and Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg has outlined his goals for the Government and the country over the coming years. He reiterated his commitment to liberal values on the environment and human rights and his determination to ensure a fair chance for every child, saying "every child can do good things, great things, if only we give them the opportunities they deserve."

The former head of school improvement for Newport City Council and education consultant,Terry Mackie, is clearly deeply concerned about the education system in Wales. He cites the PISA Survey of 2009. This compares 15years olds from 65 countries. It is a damning indictment of what the Labour/Plaid Coalition Government have allowed to happen to education in Wales. Wales is not only bottom of the UK league but even worse than in 2006. The 2010 summer assessments confirm that at 14, 16, and 18, our students are losing ground compared to the rest of the UK.

On 5th May you have a choice. You can keep the discredited First Past the Post system to elect our MPs, or you can choose a new and fairer system - Alternative Vote (AV). Back the campaign for change at www.YesToFairerVotes.org

AV is a small change that makes a big difference.

Saying YES! to Fairer Votes Means:

Bill Brereton has welcomed the Coalition Government's Budget, which delivers the key Liberal Democrat manifesto commitment of cutting taxes for those on low and middle incomes and raising the poorest workers out of paying Income Tax altogether.

The Budget also scraps Labour's planned fuel duty rise, gives real help for local businesses and creates thousands more apprenticeships.

Last Friday I was at the Mosque in Grosvenor Road talking to people who had gone there to pray.

I know that many are deeply troubled over events in Libya. Some are Libyans and have family and friends in danger there.

It is a nightmare scenario for a state to turn its war machine on its own people. This sadly is a reality.

I am concerned to hear that the Children's Commissioner for Wales has said that the standards for educating children in care across Wales are "ridiculously low." The Children's Commissioner, Keith Towler calls it "shaming" on BBC Wales' Eye on Wales. He urges greater educational aspirations for those children. His report comes 10 years after the Waterhouse Report, which followed a public inquiry into allegations of physical and sexual abuse in children's homes in north Wales.

We had a really successful street stall in Wrexham town centre today giving people information about the AV Referendum.

AV, although not perfect is the way forward. We need to make sure that our politicians are responsible to the people - not just the party that selects them and drops them into safe seats.

The Conservative Home Secretary Theresa May seems intent on introducing elected Police Commissioners across Britain. This is an ill thought out and costly concept.

Yes it is clear that the power of the Chief Constable does need to be controlled.

We know that very clearly in North Wales.

It is also clear that Police Authorities are not always able to do this.

I was interested to see that Dr John Ball, an economics lecturer of Swansea University, giving evidence to the Welsh Affairs Select Committee asserted that a key plank of the assembly government's economic strategy was "cloud cuckoo land"

Dr Ball, an economics lecturer of Swansea University, said the skills were not there for inward investors. Something serious, he said, had to be done about education.

    Article: Mar 16, 2011

Clwyd South Liberal Democrats have selected Johnstown businessman Bruce Roberts as their candidate for the National Assembly elections on May 5th.

Bruce will be well known to most people having stood in Clwyd South in last year's Westminster elections and increased the Lib Dem vote share by 2%.

Bruce lives with his family in Johnstown and runs his own Accountancy firm in Wrexham. His wife Anna is a local school teacher, and all his children attend local schools.
